If you have overridden the default maintenance-page.tpl.php in your sub-theme, you’ll need to fix the broken $highlighted variable in it.
Edit your maintenance-page.tpl.php and replace the occurrence of <?php print $highlight; ?> with <?php print $highlighted; ?>
