I really like screencasts. Generally speaking they are great if someone take the view that the views of the screencast know absolutely nothing about the module .
However, the screen cast posted by Thomas Seidi does not produce... Sorry Thomas.
I am confused about some very basic concepts. Can someone please provide a little insight.
1. What is a "service class"?
2. I followed the screencast and entered the server name "Database server" in the server name field. But this name did not appear in the service class. Do I need to set up a new mysql database to query? Do I need an account setup with a database server?
3. What is "database server" anyway? Is it an arbitrary name I assign or is it linked to something?
4. Is there a missing module i need called database server?
5. Do I need to view a newer screencast? Is the screencast old now?
Thanks,
spineless

Allthegearnoidea commentedAs this is now over 2 years old you have probably sorted your issue. But for any future searches who are not techies (such as myself) HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS.
I was also struggling to get a Service class, as every time I tried to set it up I only had the choice of choose a service class and then no choices.
If you install this module: https://www.drupal.org/project/search_api_db
you then have the choice under service class of "database service", which then makes tutorials like this one: http://envisioninteractive.com/drupal/drupal-7-views-with-faceted-filter... Much easier to follow.
Hope this helps.

drunken monkeyThanks a lot for sharing this!
It seems in this case we should better display an erorr message to the user so they know what to do. Patch attached – would you say that helps? (You'd need to uninstall the search_api_db module again to test it.)

Allthegearnoidea commentedThanks drunken monkey, when I have a few spare minutes I'll uninstall on my test site and test the patch. Am I being dim? Where is the patch attachment?

drunken monkeyNo, I was: I forgot to attach the patch, that happens from time to time.
Drupal.org should have a warning for such cases, like Thunderbird …
