Is there any general wisdom on upgrading subthemes vs redoing from scratch? I suppose it might depend at least partly on just how complex the subtheme is. But if any rules of thumb have developed from experience, I would appreciate it.

I usually start porting everything from template.php.
Then I port the CSS and try to make everything work just by changing the selectors.
