I am using a Database Search sever with a index on nodes. In views I am trying to display the Title and a shot text with the matching strings highlighted in it. Is the "Search: Excerpt" field the right one? It stays empty.

The existence of an excerpt is optional for service classes, and Database search currently doesn't (and can't) provide one. You can either use the Solr service class, or provide a custom processor for manually adding an excerpt to search results.
