Could you please take a look at http://drupal.org/node/506654 ? The patch for D6 it's already there (multiple reports say that it's working fine), your module is the perfect place for such a feature, and it's something that would be really nice to have.

I second this. I haven't tried the patch myself, but if it indeed does what it says it does, then I would like to see this patch included in a module update.

it should work using relationships.
so for using this module for field from referenced node(s) you should first build the nodereference relationship.
