At the moment I'm manually adding each user.

thats great, and i looked at it earlier.

ive noticed you provided the patch:

i dl'ed it, but have no idea how to install it, could you give me a clue :)

Alternatively you can manually edit the simplenews.module and apply the patch to the source code.
