The background color seems to be impossible to change from black! Is there a way that anyone knows to get this working?

Which background color you want change ? Because actually, you can only change the background color of the overlay for the crop. You can see an example on http://aswissidea.org (white for thumbnail and black for large).

dxxSame issue for me, after fast reading code of module, it's appear that is not implemented. The $bgcolor of jcrop_settings are simply not used :/
Edit: Confusion, rereading the comment # 3 of the author, this parameter sets the background color of the overlay and not the background color when the work area is enlarged beyond the image.
