Continuing the comparison with Menalto's Gallery2 ...
Gallery2 allows the admin to set a file space quota for each user, depending on their role. This is useful for my art society's site on shared hosting, where space costs money. It might need a stronger concept of ownership of the media than the current Media Gallery.

Proposed resolution

Add file space quota support.

API changes

I cannot find references to file space quotas for the file upload or new image types in D7, so perhaps this is a more fundamental issue in Drupal. (There are quota modules to limit number of nodes per user etc, but not file space)

No!
I have not yet had time to attempt a D7 module, but it seems more complex than D6. I have not managed to find references to file quotas in the APIs, but perhaps I have not used the correct terms to search.
