Also i cannot figure out which version of Drupal I am using..i think its 5.x - 1.0
how do i figure this out?

See for your Drupal version in system.module
Use the corresponding smileys module for your Drupal version.

thanks a lot..my version is 5.1 i figured this out at last :)
but the smileys is still not ok :(
and the smileys version i am using is 5.x - 1.1
pls help :)

After installing the module, you need to activate smileys filter for the input format you want to use it with. see Administer -> Site configuration -> Input formats. On that page, "configure" Limited HTML(say) and enable smileys filter. Then use it.
