Coming from #1192324: AJAX HTTP error thrown when saving a formatter other than default in new panels display - formatter styles form throws somtimes notices on formatter settings (best example is an image field). Sometimes ajax errors are thrown as well (although I couldn't reproduce that).
Patch attached fixes the notices, but should be tested on a couple of Field API fields though to make sure.
