To cleanup some strings in the punctuation settings, and improve performance and extensibility, we should cache pathauto_punctuation_chars() not just statically so that t() does not even need to be called more than once per several requests. We should also allow this list to be altered so that sites with odd characters do not have to hack the module.

gregglesI think the solution for "We should also allow this list to be altered so that sites with odd characters do not have to hack the module." is that those folks should use transliteration module.
But, I defer, of course ;)
