I can use the site slogan and upload my own image to use as logo. But if I turn logo off the site name does not show up. Works with other themes. Made sure the Site Name box is checked. Cleared all cache. Not sure where else to go on this...

Checked if the same problem existed for me, and it did, but my site name is embedded in the logo image..

But what happens when you update the theme? You have to remember this fix, which surely would have been forgotten.
This is a bug. "Site name" is an option that can be toggled on in the theme settings. If it doesn't work, it's by definition a bug.
