When using double optin, two user messages are set -- so a user may see

"You have chosen to subscribe to..."
and
"Thank you, you have been successfully subscribed"

created a patch to run a check for double optin and not set the second message if true

Fret not! The 7.x-4.x and 8.x versions come highly recommended. Both are using Mailchimp’s new API 3.0 and are being actively maintained. “What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger!”
