You are not using the correct type of form field box for the password. The password is exposed to the user (not hidden) and anyone else who's standing around. It appears whenever that form is revealed.

For the settings screen, this will be fixed in 6.x-2.x-dev now.

For the installer, this will be fixed as part of #1026426: Installation issues: FAPI rewrite of installer when I add the new installer wizard shortly.
