I've just discovered the wonderful "rounded corners" effect provided by "Custom Styles" for the panel region options. Is there a way for users to contribute additional "custom styles" to be included under the "Custom Styles" option?
I feel Custom Styles holds a lot of potential that should be capitalized on, and with contributed styles, panels and panel pages could gain a lot in their themability.

merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedYou can always create an issue with the 'needs review' status with all the files needed for the plugin, and if they're high enough quality I can commit them.
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedThat's good to know though I am unskilled in that realm. I think the fact that users can submit additional custom styles should be promoted more. Currently there are only two custom style options. I hope others will be able to contribute other styles.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedI have always wanted contributed custom styles, but people with the skill rarely have the interest.
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedThat's a pity, perhaps awareness may be a contributing factor. Maybe you could add a sentence or something in the module page discussing it, perhaps even a link to this issue/thread?

Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedMerlin,
I have had to learn panels' style system for a client and develop a few custom style that are a very basic plug and play for panels (drop them right into the styles folder in panels). If you would like a few style made to go with panels, let me know I would be happy to do what I can.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedI would love some! Simple, broadly useful styles are best. They can exist as examples and it'd be lovely to have more than just the kind of weak rounded corners.
My biggest problem is that I lack the design skills to come up with style decorates that really help.
I can actually do quite a bit quickly if I just get the basic HTML + CSS + images (if needed) especially if the images are grayscale recolorable for stylizer.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedI have a few examples for you, go to http://www.talisman-design.com and the sideblocks, style driven. there is a parchment example on the profile page but you would need to make an accout which the side is closed right now.
These styles are based off your work with the rounded-corners style since I could find any good info on the styles API. They work and do what they should do, so all is well.
Some ideas would be helpful what you mean by "simple" and "broadly used". Also if anyone else has some ideas i'll get them pushed out asap (mind you after my work is done. :)
I also included two example pics for you to look at.
Thanks,
Draven
Comment #8
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedLook forward to more styles. Thanks for your work.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedSimple, broadly useful files would probably not look out of place in most themes. It means they need to be able to persist more or less on their own.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedAnytime, Ideas, ideas, ideas .... Let me know what would be useful for everyone. Ill try to make a bunch that everyone will like, i just need some input for the community on what would be good.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedOK,
I made a few prototypes as just the basic full images (not styles ... yet). I want to get some input on them before going the full 9 yards.
The examples are (from left to right) Sticks, Tape and Paper, Brass corners, and Metal Rivets.
I also gave 2 files one with a white background and one with a black background to better see how they would feel.
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedI like the built in rounded corners and rounder corners with shadow. It would be so much better if we could change the color of the rounded color border and the shadow color - not just gray.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedI am looking to design some completely new styles for everyone for panels. I posted 4 examples in comment #11, also any other ideas anyone might have I would be happy to create.
If different colored rounded corners are wanted they might be able to be done through stylizer, if not i would create them gladly.
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedI'd appreciate it greatly if the ability to change the colors of rounded corners style to be built in. I don't really want to be required to install an additional module if the module can already support the functionality.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedI'm not sure the sticks one is going to be all that useful as a generic style, but the paper and rivets ones actually look like they could work in a variety of themes and would make excellent examples for building customized pane look and feel.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedOk, I'll get started on the rivets and tape ones soon, what about the brass corner?
Can stylizer change the rounded corners to different colors or would you like me to make them other colors?
Thanks,
Draven
Comment #17
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedStylizer doesn't currently change the shadow color, though it conceivably could.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedNow do you want these in grey-scale, what graphic format, and do you want me to write the plugin (since I am not a great coder) or do you want to write the plugin and i create the graphics for you?
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedI can write the plugin. Typically the graphics should be in one or more png files; if you give me the rules needed for recoloring and cutting into pieces, and the HTML I can write the plugin.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedI cut the "box" apart for you in .png.
I should be able to get this done sometime this week, hopefully.
Just for reference i use: Photoshop and 3ds max for most of my work.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedIt's easiest if the box is a single image (especially if they recolor the same way) and you give coordinates for cutting apart. That's how the rounded corners one works. Though a smaller image than rounded corners uses would probably be good. It throws away a lot of the initial image, which is kind of a waste of CPU time when recoloring.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedOk so,
-- One solid image
-- Greyscale?
-- Size of image?
-- Are we talking the corners as one image or the entire "box" as one image?
Sorry, just need some more clarification.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedIt doesn't have to be the entire box, as long as it contains regions that can be cut out. If you look, for example, in garland's color directory there's an image that contains several zones obviously meant to be colored and cut out. You can do that, no problem.
There are two methods of colorization I can use. One takes a gray scale image and colors it, one takes a colored image and shifts all the color in it. The latter is really cool but harder to create base images that work.

Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedActually, I have the Stylizer module installed though I've forgot where it has come into play for changing colors, but if Stylizer can change the colors of the rounded corners style then go for it. Built-in functionality would be ideal though.
Also, thanks for you effort Draven in contributing new styles.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedI have create the taped corners style at #1230288: Taped Corners style but please becareful since I am a graphic designer not a coder as per Merlin's post he stated to create the graphics and he would make the plugin.
Watch the issue queue for more style, as I have free time I make some style as requested in this thread. So if you have ideas, let hear them :)
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedAnother style I'd like to see is a rounded corners on three corners, so three rounded with one right angle corner. Possible?
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedYes very easy, i can alter merlins rounded corners. I'll do this one after the rivets style.
**Comment bookmarked for future style**
Comment #29
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedI wanted to make a note that, as I do each style I am going to wait for it to be re-written by Merlin than when the first style is completely ready for everyone, ill move to the next style.
There isn't much point in moving to another style until the previous style is completed.

Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedOk,
I designed the metal rivets final product so I thought I would share it. Its not a style yet, just an image.
Let me know what you think.
Draven
Comment #33
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedSince I can attach a new file after I submitted my post here is and example of the metal frame style as a style on a website.
Its displaying the theme switcher module.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedI had to change the metal frame style a bit because the background(inside the box) was too busy after you overlay it with the panel contents. So here is the new version.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedDraven: I want to apologize for not getting to this. It's been a rough week. And I'm leaving on vacation for a week in the a.m, so it's going to wait even longer. Sorry!
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedOh I understand Merlin,
Just so Everyone understand where the custom styles stand.
I have about 10 or more custom styles for panels which I use on prodution websites, Merlin and I are looking for someone who knows module building to create a very simple module to hold the "Custom styles". If we can get someone to come forward to help with a simple sub-module development, i can start dropping my styles in for everyone to use. Ill make any style a person wants (as time allows).
I will keep creating custom styles and my warning is as it stands
If I have time int he coming weeks I might try my hand at the sub-module building if no one else comes forward.
If you would liek to see some of the custom styles in-use visit http://www.talisman-design.com. It uses panels everywhere and custom styles.
Thanks,
Draven
Comment #37
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedGreetings all, I did manage to get a sub-module to hold all the styles I created for panels, i have to do a few more tweaks to it so the styles can be tuned off/on in the admin and such things but it should be up and running very soon.
Stay tuned for more info.

Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedAwesome work guys, will this be supported in D6 or will this be straight to D7?
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedThis will be a D7 only since I cant test D6 since I don't have a site for D6, Gives a reason to upgrade doesn't it? :)
Also on a side note I have a 2nd person work with me that will design a few styles.
Draven
Comment #40
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedThat's a pity your work won't work with D6, I myself will be running D6 until a few core modules are upgraded.
I'm sure there are others who would appreciate D6 support.
Keep it up.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedFrom what I have seen alot of panels in D6 and D7 are similar, if I find someone a bit more advanced in PHP than I they might be able to back port it. Or if I have the time I might be able to do it. The module is so close to being finished right now, I just need help with the CTool intergration.
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedI understand, its better to get out a release now and work on D6 later when time permits.
merlinofchaos CreditAttribution: merlinofchaos commentedI'm going to try really hard to squeeze in some time this week to look at this. Sorry that I've been so unavailable!
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedI have the full module written Merlin, I just need a bit of help with Ctools integration.
What I have now is Ctools see's all the styles, but on my admin page i have a checkbox for each style which i need Ctools to only see a checked box. If you could help me learn this i would be very grateful. I know it shouldn't be too hard.
Please let me know if you could help with this last step, as its the only thing holding this module from release. You can contact me thru this site with your email Or I could post my code here(i dont like flooding the issues or forums with code :/)
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedOK, another post for everyone as examples of whats is to come with this module.
This are the styles to come with "Panels Custom Styles" module. I would love some feedback on these styles and any other styles you might have in mind.
Thanks,
Draven

mansspams CreditAttribution: mansspams commentedI think the best approach is to make new theme and include these styles with it. I am looking at images and they are too specific for general use and probably will not be included in release with Panels. If you have pane styles like these, they require also adjustments to page background and other areas, like footer and header.
Draven_Caine CreditAttribution: Draven_Caine commentedA custom module is being developed for these new styles, as I am working with Merlin with some new styles he wants (ie. taped corners) the other styles other than taped corners are styles I made for my use and are only listed as examples.
valante CreditAttribution: valante commentedI'm using a Panels style in my site that I believe is generic enough. It renders the panes in a region as fields in a fieldset. Comes with basic but useful configuration options.
Any takers?
Letharion CreditAttribution: Letharion commented@valante, I would like to see those styles. :)
valante CreditAttribution: valante commentedI've written it as a separate module for some reason I can't remember, but here is the plugin's inc file. Enjoy!
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedbackport to D6 please
Comment #54
Stomper CreditAttribution: Stomper commentedAnother design suggestion.
I understand that there already exists a "rounded corners" style. Is there away for users to overlap panel regions and have the "rounded corners" effect merge to create "polygonish" rounded borders, kinda-sorta blended.
