I'm working with the media_gallery module for some time now. I would say stay with Coppermine for the moment and cross check the features of both solutions on every new release. As far as I know Coppermine it's far more advanced than the current version of media_gallery (beta6).
The moment the media module becomes stable, work on media_gallery should become a bit easier and more reliable. So far media module made many underlying changes that broke media_gallery on a regular basis. ;)
But please, work with us to make media_gallery a solid foundation for media galleries (not just images) in Drupal.

lsolesen CreditAttribution: lsolesen commentedI am marking this as fixed. I would not suggest an upgrade to media gallery until it reaches a stable version.
The beta version works allright, but as the project page states, you should be willing to tolerate bugs.
