Robert Douglass has set up a Drupal site to act as a central hub for students and mentors involved in the Summer of Code: Planet SoC. Drupal's group page is here. The project outlines from the students will be listed below.

This post is an attempt to summarize the current thoughts and to get some discussion and feedback. Click on "read more" for the full details.
Dries and I have been working on a chapter for an edited collection in my field, Computers and Writing. A work-in-progress version of the article has been accepted to and is open to discussion for the Computers and Writing Online 2005 Conference hosted on Kairosnews. The article questions the appropriateness of the term "content management" and discusses Drupal history, its software features, and the Drupal community.
The Drupal ad for the Free Software Magazine, designed by the Drupal community, has been finalized.
As we already reported, we chose Josh Stevens' idea for the ad. However, most people preferred Chris Messina's later variation with slightly different layout and graphics. Because the deadline was approaching rapidly, Chris' version was further improved and finalized not so long ago.
The finished ad focuses on Drupal's variety and large install base by asking the question "What do so many online communities have in common?", to which the answer is (obviously) "Drupal". The background contains a large list of both popular and lesser known Drupal sites to illustrate the point. Read on for a peek at the final result.
Robin Good has published an extensive (93 page) review of group blogging software. He very clearly identifies the features and functionality that is important to group blogging as well as several scenerios where group blogging is used. He clearly understands the field and is in a good position to make meaningful comparisons. His review of Drupal is mostly positive and his criticisms are, in my opinion, very just. It is also important to read his reviews of the other software presented to see what is being done better elsewhere.
As reported last week, we have been offered one full-page ad in the Free Software Magazine. We asked the Drupal community to design ads from which we would select one for publication. The feedback we got was amazing, resulting in a dozen ads being proposed and discussed. Unfortunately, we can only select one ad for publication and the May 30th deadline is approaching rapidely. Based on the feedback, I selected one of the beautiful and clever ads designed by Josh Stevens. Josh's winning ad is shown on the right; you can click the thumbnail to see the full-version. Unfortunately, we aren't quite there yet. Hence, the goal of this thread is to finalize the ad; that is, to get the message and the brand right. In other words, it is time for the final polish so please share your thoughts or improvements in the comments ... and hopefully, with the help of the various Drupal designers (and Josh in particular), we can craft the final version of what will be the very first Drupal ad.
Update #1:Chris Messina submitted an interesting variant on Josh's version. See this composite image for ease of comparison. What do you think? More variants with incremental improvements are welcome but most of all, we are looking for concrete suggestions as how to improve the text at the bottom of the ad.
