Call for OSCMS 2007 slides and notes

If you gave a presentation at OSCMS (or attended one and took really good notes), please add a child page to OSCMS 2007 event page in the handbook with your stuff (slides, outline, etc.). Looks like several people have done this, but not everyone quite yet.

Thanks!

The beginnings of the new language subsystem is in Drupal 6.x-dev!

Following on a huge amount of discussion and planning at the Internationalization Group, Jose A. Reyero, Károly Négyesi (chx) and Gábor Hojtsy (myself) prepared a big patch to introduce better language support into Drupal 6.x-dev. We got significant code reviews and correction tips from Dries Buytaert, Steven Wittens and Doug Green. As a result, the development version of Drupal 6 now includes a generic language setup screen with support for right-to-left written scripts, native language names, path and domain based language selection and browser language detection. We also added support for language dependent path aliases, so you can have addresses like "example.com/espanol/contacto" and "example.com/english/contact", or alternatively "english.example.com/contact" and "espanol.example.com/contacto".

Although some of this functionality was available in contributed modules, such as i18n module and localizer module, we plan on making Drupal 6 the first release to include decent language support at the core level, of which this was the first significant step. We tried to test as many aspects of the changes as possible, but still we would welcome more testers for this particular feature, as well as opinions and contributions for new functionality implemented for Drupal 6.

Join us in the Internationalization Group and grab our code from our Subversion repository (information on the group homepage), or test the changes already included in Drupal 6.x-dev, by downloading the latest development tarball.

Summer of Code: only two days left!

There's still time to be part of Google Summer of Code 2007! The deadline is Monday, March 26th at 5PM PDT. If you're a student, and you'd like to get your start in the community (or have already been around and would like to get paid for a new project you'd love to do :)), please apply!

We've had a number of great applications, but we would love to have even more! :) Summer of Code is a great way to get your start in Drupal's rich community of knowledgeable developers.

Some suggested proposal ideas are available from Proposed projects, including several high-profile and exciting projects such as the project quality metrics system; however, feel free to come up with your own nifty ideas, or flesh out one of the Proposal ideas.

Note to any students who aren't applying because they don't think they'll get accepted: You never know if you don't apply. ;) When I applied for Drupal, I had absolutely zero experience with the project... and look at me now. ;)

Apply today! :D

Ubersoft.net now live on Drupal 5.1

It's alive! http://ubersoft.net

It took about three months, but it's finally up and running. My brain is fried, but it's finally up and running. Every once and a while I twitch uncontrollably... but it's finally up and running.

And worth it, I think. It was worth the trouble it took to get done.

A little background:

I publish a webcomic called Help Desk. I've been doing it since 1996, and for most of that time it was all static pages. When I joined Keenspot (a webcomics collective) in 2000 I added some templating tools they developed that allowed the static pages to be built automatically every night, but it was still not a particularly dynamic system, and I always thought that was a shame. I'd always wanted the site to be sort of like Slashdot -- post a comic and let people comment on it if they wanted to.

Initial Ubercart Release (new e-commerce package)

After countless hours of development, experimentation, API referencing, and good ol' fashioned beating our heads against our desks, the team at Ubercart.org has finally put up an initial release of the Übercart module package. This is being considered an alpha release, with the official 1.0 release being many development hours away as we build on and flesh out some of the core systems. However, the module package as it stands is able to run e-commerce sites and is already being used in live sites. Everyone is welcome to showcase their Übercart site in our forums!

In short, Übercart is a module package designed to let administrators run an e-commerce store on their Drupal sites. For more information, you can view the project page. This package has been developed to address a different set of needs and accommodate some different design goals than the current e-commerce module package. We hope to build a comparison and contrast page on our site that store owners can use to compare feature sets, and we look forward to getting some input from the e-commerce experts and developers experienced with other open source e-commerce solutions!

Drupal Develiconference - March 17th (TODAY!) at Noon EST

Questions for the presenters can be asked in #drupal. All conference participants are urged to join that channel if possible.

I'm pleased to announce the second Drupal Develiconference! Everyone who is currently involved with, or interested in Drupal development and the development process is encouraged to attend. There will be a Q&A segment after the presentations.

The conference lines will open earlier this time, at 9AM Pacific(GMT-7), Noon Eastern, 4PM London. I'll try to keep the mute off until the conference begins in case anyone wants to chat, but last time there was alot of noise on the line (more like a train derailing) so please use your phone's mute feature or Skype's "mute microphone" feature until you want to speak.

The "official" conference will begin at 9:15AM Pacific and will last for approx. 45min. The call will be recorded and published on Drupal.org for those not able to attend, the recoding will be done by our conference provider this time, and the quality of the call should be significantly better.

For more information about how to attend this conference, including the free Skype number and call in numbers for the US, UK, etc, read on...
