GovCraft is a free, open-source Drupal theme designed for U.S. government agencies and public-sector websites.
Built on the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS), GovCraft provides a reusable design system with 50 Single Directory Components (SDCs), including headers, navigation, hero sections, cards, news listings, service listings, forms, and footers. Where USWDS has a component, GovCraft recompiles it with the theme's own palette and typography; where it has none, GovCraft adds a custom one.
Key features
- USWDS-based design system tailored for government websites.
- 50 reusable Drupal Single Directory Components.
- Integration with Drupal Canvas for visual page building: editors place and fill in components without writing code.
- Responsive layouts for desktop and mobile devices.
- Designed with WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 accessibility requirements in mind.
- No build step: the compiled USWDS assets and fonts ship with the theme.
Requirements
- Drupal 11.3 or later.
No other module or library is required.
Recommended modules
- Drupal Canvas: to place the components on pages. Without it the components still render from Twig templates, but an editor cannot place them.
- Webform: the theme styles Drupal forms and returns the visitor to the webform after sending it.
Installation
composer require drupal/govcraft
Then go to Appearance, install GovCraft, and set it as the default theme.
Related project
GovStarter is a separate Drupal CMS site template built on top of GovCraft. It provides a starting point for government websites, including sample pages, content structures, navigation, and configuration.
Development and maintenance
GovCraft is developed by Mobomo and distributed as a free, open-source contribution to the Drupal community. The project is currently under active development.
