Minimal steps to reproduce

From a fresh drupal 11.3.9 install:

  • add Privatemsg "write and view message" permission to the authenticated user.
  • create a new user from admin/people/create.
  • log in with the new user on another browser.
  • with the new user try to go to /messages/new.
  • => get a "page not found".
  • with the admin account try to send a message to the new user.
  • => the new user doesn't show in the autocomplete field.

How to resolve:

  • go to the new user edit page (from admin or from the logged user).
  • save.
  • the new user can now send a message, and is visible in the autocomplete field.

I don't know if the same thing happens with the usual user registration process (I'm still testing on local)

I tested again how it works in Drupal 6 and 7:

Drupal 6:
Enabled by default for all users. User can disable.

Drupal 7:
Enabled by default for all users. User can disable.

I updated the code. Enabled by default for new users. User can disable.

Could you download dev-version and test it?

So I tried:
- enabling the module before creating users
- enabling the module after creating users
- creating users via /people/create
- creating users via registration (without mail confirmation)

I tried my best, but I failed, I wasn't able to reproduce this bug...

Well done! You're the best! ^^
Thanks for your great support!
