In the process of testing for #3108487: Smart date rules are not translatable I noticed some odd behaviour. This included the instances generated from recurring dates being in an odd order, and the recurring formatter not showing the correct number of instances, and sometimes not the expected instances.

This patch seems to fix the reported odd behaviours in sorting and display with the recurring formatter.

The fixes are reasonably important (especially for the recurring formatter), so decided to go ahead and merge this in. Please reopen if any problems are found.
