I also have included a PO file with French strings.

Looks good! I can't find any reference as to how contrib modules should handle PO files, and I couldn't find any major ones that included any, so I left that out for now... @PascalBer do you know of any contrib modules that include their own PO files?

According to the programmer I work with, the PO files should be uploaded on https://localize.drupal.org/
