As mentioned in #2956764: AMP Roadmap, removing the metadata handling from this module would both simplify this module quite a bit and also allow for much more robust metadata provided by the Schema.org Metatag module. Since this breaks backward compatibility it probably should be done in a new 8.2 branch.

This can't be tested until branch tests are fixed, and I would also tag a new release before doing this, but here is a patch.
