This module came very close to meeting my needs out of the box. All it needed was a plain URL formatter so that I could drop in the functionality without rebuilding my custom templates for displaying the downloadable links.

I already have a patch that is working for me and is ready for review.

Here is an example of what the patch adds to the field display UI:
