Lock is the evil. We can do better with any decent MySQL. I know D5.x is supposed to support MySQL 3.x but really -- if you are running such a huge site that you are running memcached, you surely have control over MySQL and have long ago went over to 5.0 anyways not the 4.1 this requires.
