Background

The Site Restricted JSON API that provided integration with Google's Programmable Search Engine stopped serving traffic on January 8, 2025.  Google recommended that clients of that API move to Vertex AI Search. The vertex_ai_search Drupal module was developed to provide integration with Google's Vertex AI Search.

The initial focus of the vertex_ai_search module was to support a search experience that is roughly-equivalent to the search experience provided by the Programmable Search Engine using the google_json_api module.  However, Vertex AI Search provides more functional opportunities than Programmable Search Engine and so the vertex_ai_search module will evolve to support more Vertex AI Search features.

Note that websites that use the Drupal google_json_api module with the standard JSON API can continue to do so. Only the Site Restricted JSON API endpoint will cease to operate.
