playfulwolf commentedSeems that those local compilers are not respecting "@" includes, where all the variables are defined. What I am doing wrong?

markhalliwell@PlayfulWolf, this is not a support forum please stop spamming this project's issue queue. The problem you are encountering has nothing to do with this project, but rather your development environment/workflow and understanding of how LESS works.
You should search for existing documentation on the internet and learn how LESS preprocessors work. LESS is not a requirement of this project, nor is it the purpose of a project to teach how to use advanced [external] techniques. It simply provides the tools to do so if desired.
how to compile less:

how to compile less bootstrap:

If you really need to ask questions, it is better to do that in the support forum or on Drupal Stack Exchange.

playfulwolf commentedMark, I did used LESS and SASS on small scale, but the problem is with linking files - some of them are not getting linked, have no idea why.
I just asked for kind advice on the exact steps how to reproduce Method 1 - as we can see, there is no exact documentation on doing this. That is all. I do not need tutorials about how computer works.

markhalliwellThe 7.x-3.0 release only supports a maximum version of Bootstrap 3.0.0.
Since it's release Bootstrap has modified their framework.
Bootstrap 3.1.1 is only supported in 7.x-3.x-dev at the moment.
You are probably encountering issues with variables being deleted/added/changed between the versions.
Again, this isn't really an issue about documentation (or steps), but rather just a fundamental coding concept when dealing with external libraries and versioning.

playfulwolf commentedOk, no prob. Will do themming CSS way.
Tried 3.0.0, 3.0.3 versions, Crunch LESS processor: the result is similar - undefined variables in some .less file. No idea why.
