I'm one of those guys who learn by doing
I've been playing with a using computers since the age of 11.
My 1st computer was a CPC 464.
My 1st contact with PHP was 2001 when I worked as a C++/Qt developer and had to create a website for the company. So I learned about PHP, which lead to learning about apache which lead to learning about linux (the gentoo way, then LFS, then various BSDs) which lead to a few projects. Later I got so many projects I decided to form a company.
I usually completed those projects on my own. Sometimes I got layouts from graphic designers which I converted to pixel perfect HTML/CSS layouts then wrote the scripts for the sites.
I had a few quite popular sites however they didn't pay off. Servers cost alot of money back then and the Internet's infrastructure wasn't as extended as it is today both in volume of visitors and advertising technology. If I still had those sites today I'd probably be rich.
It is what it is. Now I'm back to square one and starting over. 2012.
