The page width is limitated to half available space

The default node display is in content top region. That's fine as far as the content right regions has existing blocks.
The problem comes when I try to create a single page with no blocks. The page width is l imitated to half available space.
Is there any way to assign content types default region to navigation bar so its content stretch across whole available width?
