There has been a quite a few fixes applied to the 6.x-1.x-dev version since July 2009 (2 years ago).
Why not release an updated stable version? Would a donation to Annertech make a difference?

Yes, almost ready to go. There are just a couple of tickets (#432474: Avatar disappearing from the selector and #1432044: PHP 5.3 unable to upload avatar) that I'm waiting for more information on before I feel happy to release it.
