There are a couple of things in the docs which could be improved to make users' lives easier. These changes would reduce the need for people to parrot responses to questions on IRC.

The top 4 issues which I've seen people get tripped up by are:

* Users restarting apache after creating the symlink
* Default php.ini settings don't support most Drupal distros
* php5-gd required for D7 installs
* Some hosts don't install rsync by default - I'm looking at you slicehost
