The hints file for OS X isn't entirely accurate as it's missing the php-gd port (required by core) and php-posix. The attached patches add mention to those ports as well as php-apc.

As well, much of the work for managing users is simplified by using Workgroup Manager. The second patch mentions this as well as where to get it.
