What's next for Managing news

See the roadmap here.

Where do I report bugs?

If you know which project is responsible for the bug, please report the bug directly to that project. If you're not sure or you just have a general bug report please use the Managing News issue queue.

How do I contribute?

Take a look at this page for information on contributing.

Does Managing News work with Internet Explorer 6?

Managing News does not work with Internet Explorer 6 and there are no plans to support it in the future.

Does Managing News work with the Drupal module/theme/project X?

Maybe. Your mileage will vary when integrating other Drupal projects with Managing News. You are welcome to start tinkering under the hood to suit your needs.

Where do I check out the HEAD version of Managing News?

Since Managing News is a Drupal install profile, there is no single repository from where you can check out all of the code that runs Managing News. You can use the managingnews.make makefile included with Managing News as a guide for checking out the projects you'd like to contribute to. Learn more about building Managing News for development here.

Why does Managing News use project X?

There are many bleeding edge projects driving Managing News (to name a few: Feeds, Data, Features, OpenLayers). Many of these projects were developed in response to the shortcomings of previous approaches found in earlier versions of Managing News.

If you're wondering why we use X instead of just doing it with Y, it's probably because we tried to do it with Y and found that it didn't work well.

How come feed data is not stored as nodes?

Data is much faster while maintaining a good level of flexibility. Data is also better suited for large one dimensional data items as it does not bring the CCK overhead.

The infrastructure Managing News is building on (in this case most importantly Feeds and Views) supports nodes as well. So you could switch the storage model to nodes. It would take some building patience though and in the end you will have forked Managing News to an extent where it will be hard to upgrade to subsequent versions.

Under mapping a new syndication there is a list of sources – how can we modify this list?

Please see this post on Drupal.org for more information.

Is it be possible to map entire regions on the map, not just specific cities or a specific latitude or longitude, for example regions?

Sure – this isn’t something that’s obvious in the stock Managing News installation, but the locations it knows about are hierarchical: cities to countries, etc. And the tree of locations in Managing News is completely customizable – if you’re tracking really local things or non-standard names for things (like industry names for regions), you can add those in. With some Drupal expertise, you could build navigation that lets you drill down the hierarchy.

Is it possible to encapsulate as features the functionality of Managing News and incorporate it into Open Atrium?

The short answer is yes. For example, we have a light news aggregator for Open Atrium that we hope to release in the coming months.

We have worked on some custom mapping features for project mapping within Open Atrium, like the mapping innovation project over at the Bank. More work is happening on OpenLayers 2, and there are sure to be more mapping features built for Open Atrium.

Is it possible to use a cron job that can be setup to automatically import feeds?

Managing News imports all feeds on cron, you will need to set up Drupal cron to make this work.

Are there any screencasts or videos about Managing News?

Definitely! Take a look at this one demonstrating the Channels user interface, and this one introducing Managing News.
