Sorry for this stupid question, but I am only planning to use Node Gallery and I havent tested it yet... But my question is: are images managed by NG2 affected by drupal filesystem mode (private / public)? because on my site, I have set it to private, but for displaying galleries (or many images at once) it could cause slowdown...

There are no stupid questions.
I don't know the answer since I have never used a private file system.
Someone will see this issue in time and they may have an answer so all of us can learn.

I use node gallery in a private system setup . No issues at all. I've gone through just about all the gallery modules from the early days of acidfree and always in a private system and I personally think Node Gallery is the pick of the bunch if you want/need user created albums that 'fit' into the drupal way. I have it working well with Taxonomy which was my other major concern given I use taxonomy to control access throughout my sites.
Answering whether or not it will cause slowdown depends on your setup of course , but for me there is no issue.
