This is what happened with me:
1. I installed the module
2. went to Content management - Meta tags
3. spotted Default and specific meta tags tab
4. happily typed in description and keywords
5. saved
6. went to see if they work, no they don't
7. read the readme.txt (no mentioning there that you need to check off some checkboxes)
8. spent half an hour on the issue queue, wondering why there are so many complaints that meta tags don't appear
9. finally realized that you also have switch those meta tags on on the settings tab
I would find it better if the content and the toggle to actually print it would be on the same tab next to each other instead of separate tabs.

Anonymous (not verified) commentedI have changed the local copy of the code to put those settings in the same fieldset titled ; in this way, when you enable the meta tags, you also see the other settings.
I changed the status to remind me that I have already changed the code, which will be committed when I am done with other changes.
Thanks for your report, and suggestion.

Anonymous (not verified) commentedI was trying to add the screenshot of how the user interface would appear, but for 6 times Drupal.org was freezing when I tried.

Anonymous (not verified) commentedThe code has been committed in the repository.
As usual, read what reported in the project page, before to update the installed modules.
