I just got an e-mail from my host (http://www.elitehosts.com) complaining that my Drupal site is loading their servers too much. It read as follows:

While investigating high loads on the server 'neo', we've found that your domain, http://www.ronandhermione.net, is causing the server load to increase dramatically, well beyond normal levels. This is likely due to the fact that your website is popular with many simultaneous visitors and uses many dynamic php webpages. We have to ask that you move your account by your next billing cycle which is 07/09/2006 (July 9th, 2006).

The site gets maybe 10,000 hits a day tops, which amounts to between 500-1000 unique hits a day. I was under the impression that this is fairly average and not exactly "a lot" but apparently it is. My previous host complained about the server load from time to time, so perhaps there's something in my Drupal configuration that's not quite right. However, I wouldn't know what as I'm always sure to follow instructions closely.

So what I'm looking for are suggestions for a host that can handle my site, but is also resonably priced. I use about 1GB of space, so 2GB minimum and go through about 30GB bandwidth a month, so need a good buffer over that to allow for increased traffic in the future.

I have been running several very database and PHP heavy websites on Dreamhost. I have been very happy with them.

Their prices are quite cheap, and there are great administration tools.

If you sign up, please either use this promo code: DRUMAN which will save you $10 off of any 1yr membership,
Or, please sign up by clicking here and make me some money :-)

I'm not just pimping the site to make myself some cash, I really am very happy with the company.

i am currently at Bluehost, and as well as 1and1 and siteground. Although I have not much traffic to speak of, Bluehost seems ok. I considered going with Site5, but was turned off by the recent problems users are experiencing lately. Dreamhost was a contender, but I was turned off by the whole referral system, only to find out that Bluehost had a similar system, (i guess they all do).

Hostgator seemed intriguing, but I figured they were based in florida and didnt want to deal with any natural disasters, but i guess their data servers are in Texas. It also hosts a lot of porn, so i was thinking could get overloaded with image files, etc.

So right now I am stuck with Bluehost, and cant find a good enough reason to change. (unlimited subdomains would be a good feature they could add, but currently it is limited to 20, and 50 db's.)

if you have a lot of large images i guess that could be your problem

Well, yes. There are a lot of large images on the site. If they are being dished up through acidfree/Drupal, would that cause an increase in server load?
