It would be great if the module could incorporate roles. For example, only active users having certain roles would be displayed in the block, and would get emails. If I am overlooking something here, please let me know! Thanks....

Bumping to D7. This won't happen for D6 unless someone volunteers to co-maintain it or writes a patch.

In the D7 version you can customize your block to only display certain roles or active users, but mails will be sent to all users. There is already an issue not to send mails to inactive users (#564076: Option not to send blocked users a mail) - I am leaving this issue for the roles.

Maybe we should utilize #623476: Integrate with Rules module (e.g. option to send user addition email prior to birthday) to do fine-grained stuff like this.
