I can configure the Rules module to perform an action that shows a message, on the event that Button Field is clicked, but the message does not show up on the current page. It doesn't appear until I go to another page or refresh the current page. Can anyone help me figure out how to get the message to show up on the current page without having to refresh?

Because the theme defines where the message is displayed, there's no way to do display the message without refreshing/redirecting the page. You can use a page redirect rule to refresh the page by using "?" for the path (without the quotes).

so what about js or jquery events to display (or do) something on current page without any redirects?
