I created a patch for the xmlcontent module - http://drupal.org/node/172549#comment-1990646 over 8 weeks ago and nothing has happened although I labelled the attachment as a patch and hoped it would be applied.

Did I fail to do something right or is there some fault in the testing infrastructure?

The maintainer of the XML Content module first needs to enable automated testing of patches for their project, in the Edit->Issue tab on their project page.
