Users who have little experience with web forms and computers in general, have a very hard time getting started with a Drupal account. One of the biggest obstacles is the need to change their password. We try to help them by providing interactive password strength and password match indicators. This is a good start, BUT by the time they succeed in getting both indicators green, many users are so exhausted, that they don't realize they need to scroll further down and click on the [Save] button for their effort to have any effect.

The interactive nature of the indicators actually have a negative effect: they suggest to newbies that the site has already accepted their password change, and no amount of preaching otherwise will help.

When "Passwords match:" turns to "yes", we should pop up some flashing text that says something like "Don't forget to click on the [Save] button below to save your changes."

I've done something like that on my D6 sites, and this has dramatically reduced the number of people who can never log in without using a password reset link.
