Can anybody recommended a best practice for menu items that are only meant to serve as a root for other items and not linked to pages or other items?

I've just recently stumbled upon the same issue... I tried:
1) http://drupal.org/project/special_menu_items

but, using the DHTML menu module, I prefer:

2) http://drupal.org/project/menu_firstchild
