it would be nice to use this module for other fields also (text/html field). maybe it is possible without much code wrangling?

Ben, thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think I'll be extending past a simple image slideshow. You may want to look at Views_Slideshow, it will handle entire nodes as a slide show.
