marcomatic CreditAttribution: marcomatic commentedHow about "Administration Theme" or "Default Administration Theme". Keep it simple and too the point for new and existing users and in the spirit of usability.

mcrittenden CreditAttribution: mcrittenden commentedI don't think it needs to be something admin-ish, we can probably just continue with the slightly abstract human naming precedence set by Garland and Minnelli. Maybe something like Asher?

marcomatic CreditAttribution: marcomatic commentedThe problem with going with some name like "Cool Theme Name" is that it does not reflect the purpose. Why not just call it what it is? I guess if it is enabled by default then any name will do, but otherwise lets just make it easy for users to find. When doing intro Drupal training the last thing a new person needs to know is I use "Ash, Slate, Bob" to give me a clean admin screen.

I like Cobalt, Moog, and Asher best so far.

annmcmeekin CreditAttribution: annmcmeekin commentedHow about Alpha, because the admin area is the starting point?
(although I do think calling it Admin, while not terribly exciting, tells the user exactly what it is)
Other ideas:
Monroe
Mansfield
Walnut (dashboard -> car -> expensive car -> walnut dashboard)
Bob
Fred
Ian
Steve
(I'll stop now)

Dries CreditAttribution: Dries commentedOn Twitter, ejk wrote @Dries after Garland and Minelli, how about "Merman" for Ethel Merman; known for playing Rose, the overbearing mother in the musical Gypsy.
I kinda really like Merman. I was on the phone with Mark Boulton when the Tweet came in, and he likes Merman too. May I suggest that we go with Merman?

Anonymous (not verified) CreditAttribution: Anonymous commentedIf Drupal's admin theme is called Merman, people might think of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merman
Comment #15
mcrittenden CreditAttribution: mcrittenden commentedI'm not a huge fan of Merman just because it sounds *sort of* like Garland and Minnelli combined. It'd be nice if it was something completely different to avoid confusion. Plus it's sort of dorky, like a mixture of a Mermaid and Herman Munster ;-)

agentrickardBikeshed. It must be called Bikeshed.

Dries CreditAttribution: Dries commentedMermen are mythical creatures who are human male from the waist up and fish-like from the waist down. That seems appropriate for Drupal (and Druplicon) -- it "rhymes" with water. ;-)

rszrama CreditAttribution: rszrama commentedI saw something about Bluecheese on Twitter and had to come +1. Sad to see it not here... Merman is fun, though I'd always pronounce it "Merman" instead of "Merman." (You can't tell, but the first one emphasizes the first syllable and the second the second, like the name.)
Other than that, I like a functional name. It would probably be less confusing than to have a unique names for both the frontend and backend themes.

Marc Bijl CreditAttribution: Marc Bijl commented@ #26 (Psicomante - July 30, 2009 - 02:31)
I know 7UP is a drink name ;)
But does anyone know if that means we're not allowed to name a drupal theme "7UP"? I'm not sure, but in the Netherlands it is allowed to use an existing brand name if it's for another type of product/service. Some examples:
Same with Garland:
Anyway, what about:

Dries CreditAttribution: Dries commentedOther suggestions:
linearowe @Dries How about Shale - a fine-grained sedimentary rock (precursor to Slate) or Quartz (Slate is composed of quartz)
nbluto @Dries D7 admin theme name shoud be Tuxedo
mig5ter @Dries how about 'Bewilderment' as a nice ironic simile of the great focus on usability :)
Dries CreditAttribution: Dries commentedWe're not going to create a poll. I don't want to create a big deal out of the name, and our time is better spent on writing code. ;-)
This should be a quick and easy decision, not a 2 week project. We're blocked on the name, so I hope we can pick one in the next few hours.
I pointed Mark Boulton to this issue, and I've asked Mark to pick a name. He designed the theme so I think it is fair for him to pick a name.
If Mark doesn't want to pick one, I'll simply pick one based on the suggestions and feedback -- as well as my personal taste.

I will sugest that we don't introduce more names, and asked Mark to pick a name. (is impossibly to we all agree with the name)
It may be not possibly to choice one name that is a global brand name.

kaakuu CreditAttribution: kaakuu commentedThink out of the box! Think something new!
Something new, that has not happened before and yet it very, very easy to implement.
Why not let the admin/user choose a name and fill it up just like choosing username ?
For example, let us suppose there's an ajax ( or ordinary ) box that appears when you fill up databasename, admin name, email address etc that states "choose your administrative theme name"
If that seems an extra step or extra work at the time of installation, these details can be filled up later just like other personal/admin/profile fields.
That way this can be something unique and something offering full liberty too :)
rszrama CreditAttribution: rszrama commented#32 - that's quite a list, and while I still think I'd prefer something that hinted at functionality, the only one that sticks out is Tuxedo. It's classy, and well, butlers wear them. And butlers are there to serve... like an admin theme. Or something. (They also might serve you Bluecheese if you ask nicely... ; )
Who wouldn't want to "dress up" their admin UI?
Dries CreditAttribution: Dries commentedTuxedo is nice too, and might be my new favorite actually. Mark thought about calling it Seven (from D7). Hopefully, he'll make a decision soon. :-)

markboulton CreditAttribution: markboulton commentedI quite like Tuxedo, but if we're going to pin meaning on this name, I'm not sure formal dress is appropriate (!). Anyway, I think I've made my choice... (drumroll...).
Seven.
From D7. It's short, makes sense, doesn't try to show meaning where there isn't any.
