Many people don't want to spend much time in site building and maintenance. They just need a configurable web site usually with a easy blog and a simple forum. Wordpress provides blog software as well as a host. Can Drupal provide similar service? I know there are some ones like http://www.drupalcafe.com/, http://freedrupal5hosting.com/ or http://www.dreamhostapps.com/, but one from Drupal team could be more reliable to many people.

Drupal.Org don't provide a hosting service, they only give you the software. But there are hundreds of hosting company can give you good support in Hosting.

I am trying to figure out how those other people manage to provide hosting for free. Call me cynical, but where's the catch?

You can host drupal on just about any php / mysql web hosting provider. I have yet to see a provider that can't support it!
