What most of the internet knows as 'avatars' are called 'user pictures' by Drupal. In code, this is often abbreviated to 'pictures', which may be quite confusing if people don't know this is about user pictures. To make Drupal more consistent with the rest of the internet and to make the name simpler I suggest we rename 'user pictures' to 'avatars'.

XanoThanks for writing a patch! I don't want to burst your bubble, but I don't think this issue will be accepted. Drupal tends to accept more technically accurate terminology in instead of adopting what the rest of the internet uses. I know I am the one who originally created this issue, but I have changed my mind would say this issue is a won't-fix.

dpiI don't think this is going to happen either.
If you want to change user exposed terminology on your site you can by changing various label and descriptions of the user picture field. For any strings see Change default strings (text) without using full translation system.
In Drupal 8, having a user picture isn't even a sure thing, since its only pre-installed with 'standard' profile.
