I've would like to create a new button to replace the default button. I tried simply replacing the 'select_images.png using the same format (normal, hover, click, disabled stacked on one image). My button is wider than the default button, but the same height.

replacing the 'select_images.png' didnt work. What is the best way to change the button? Thank you for any help or direction...

Okay, well, i guess doing this does work. It didn't work at first for me (perhaps it was a caching issue) although it's working now.

I guess i'm still curious if this is the best way to 'theme' the button?

It isn't, but you could have a look at the file "swfupload-settings.tpl.php" which can be replaced by a custom file. There you can change the icon url.
