When editing my CCK user reference field if I tick the checkbox next to Grant "view" node access to user and then hit save, it appears that this is not being stored. When I go back to edit the CCK field the checkbox is empty.

I'm using a view to select the user if that makes any difference.

That was it, I had to open and then save all my nodes for the access to take place. Works a treat now.

I believe also you could have updated all the nodes simply by visiting 'admin/content/node-settings/rebuild'

It may be worth asking the user to rebuild when they edit a field if there are existing nodes of that type.
