It would be great if the user could choose whether or not to display his/her email address. The current configuration limits users ability to communicate outside of the application.

Hmmm... I'm not sure this is a useful feature. These days, *no one* wants their e-mail address up on the web unless it really needs to be.

I think the original thrust of this feature request was to allow communication between members. Doesn't the privatemsg module allow that?

So, should we WONTFIX this? Or would it actually be useful to some people? We could apply spam-filter armouring like Slashdot does.

You could easily make a custom module with the option to publicly show your email, and then show it or not, using _user hook(). IMHO it's a WONTFIX.
