Problem/Motivation

Add a "Manage directories" button (icon) for users with permission to edit the directories vocabulary.

I think the button should just open the vocabulary administration in a new window.

Without the button regular users may not find where they can administer the media directories.

Can you elaborate more why this might be needed?
While it is possible to manage directory tree in vocabulary directly, the assumed way of doing this is the browser and no one should touch the vocabulary.

Thanks @rang501 - funny UX issue!

Right mouse click isn't typically expected in Browser Applications and is totally untypical in Drupal - so I never found that!
I didn't know about the possibility to manage the folders in /admin/content/media-browser

So maybe we should use this chance to improve usability - here or in a dedicated issue - for the folder management.

I'd vote to put a three dot button on the right side of each folder line with the same options you're seeing when using right-click. That also works with touch.

You're right, now that I know this option exists, the taxonomy doesn't need to be edited in Drupal directly. Thanks!

Issue #3614816: Add a three dots menu button to directory rows in the...
rang501’s picture

@anybody The tree sidebar is only place this right-click context menu is being used. I would argue that the right click is faster to use than the dots menu. The issue you describe is clear and I would definitely see that new users may not understand how to manage folder tree.

I had initial version, which added two buttons - add subdirectory and delete directory. At that time I felt that these take up too much space and right click would be the most compact option.

I committed a change which will show dots menu on hover. If media count badge is visible, it will be replaced. So now there are two ways to open the menu. I preserved the old way, because on 2.x it worked with right click.

Did you find how to use drag and drop to move folders around the tree?

Thanks @rang501 - yes drag + drop was expected, but right click not. I'd vote to click the three dot menu for consistent behaivour and touch device support and then show the same popover, like with right click. And I think it should me on the right side, count left besides it.

Right click should be kept as additional enhancement.

@anybody

I completely missed that the touch screens to not have hover effect :)

I have changed implementation. When a directory is selected, it will show the dots menu. It does not replace the count badge, it just preserves the space so no content shifting is happening.

Hopefully it looks now better and more usable.
