As far as I can see, currently, the module sorts the order of content types (node bundles) via their machine name nor their 'friendly' names.

On our educational site the content type friendly names evolve over time this can lead to a seemingly random sort order as depicted here where the node type machine names are shown in the dark pink/purple colour.

What is determining the order in which these are displayed?

I would suggest that they are sorted in order of the 'friendly' names.

- Categories (groups) are displayed in the same order as they are entered in the main configuration form
- Within each category, content types are displayed according to the weight configured in the Type Tray settings for that content type.
